JAPANESE PEANUTS, more from Mexico than from Japan!

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Ideal as snack...

Maybe all your life you thought that Japanese peanuts originated in Japan and arrived in Mexico in some cultural exchange, becoming part of the frequent products in the 'tienditas', but it is not so, although they are somehow linked to the Japanese country, they are totally Mexican.

In 1945, Yoshigei Nakatani, a Japanese immigrant in Mexico, created what we know today as Japanese Peanuts, by frying these seeds in a paste of flour and soy sauce. Nakatani made them popular by selling them from his cart in the La Merced neighborhood of Mexico City and his business grew to become the Nipon brand.

"The Japanese", as he was known in the aisles of the large CDMX market, offered these peanuts on the street and in the market to every person who passed by. Then they became so successful that people began to look for him to buy their snack.
